Organize like the pros: the best tips for your closet

Your closet sometimes smells a little musty, is overcrowded or could use some inner beauty? Then the following tips are just right for you!

Sorting out is half the battle

The first step to a tidy closet is always to sort it out. Because let's face it, probably most of us own too much clothing. So first, pick out all the clothes that you no longer wear, for example, because they are damaged, do not fit you or you just do not like them anymore.

Having trouble saying goodbye to your clothes? Be aware of how long you haven't worn some of your clothes. There are several ways to do this:

1. The next time you organize your closet, hang the hangers in the opposite direction that you would normally hang them. As you hang the worn garment back, rotate the hanger. If the hanger hasn't changed position after six months, that's a sign that you haven't worn that item at all and can discard it.

2. if you want to tinker a little, hang pretty ribbons on the hangers instead with the date of last use written on them.

3.With your folded clothes, put a sheet of paper with the current date on top of the pile as you sort. What you find underneath after half a year, you probably won't wear in the future.

You've already been able to sort out a few pieces of clothing? Very well, but don't just throw them away - you should sell, give away or donate undamaged garments.
The average German buys 60 pieces of clothing every year! So that it is not stuffed after the next season and a few shopping trips again, as at the beginning, you can adhere to the following rule: Every time a new piece of clothing moves into your closet, an old one moves out.

A closet like a picture book

Do you attach particular importance to your closet not only being tidy, but also looking appealing from the inside? Then sort your clothes by color: For example, hang them in a color gradient from light to dark or place clothes with a similar color on top of each other. If you use storage boxes in your closet, choose them in a single color that you like. Your hangers should all look the same, too, so that the inside of your closet looks as harmonious as possible.

Use a seasonal closet

To create as much space as possible in your closet, you should only store in it what you really need at the moment. The weather outside is getting warmer? Then sort out your winter clothes and store them under your bed, in the basement or in the attic. It's best to use transparent storage boxes so that you can still see what you're storing in them later. Alternatively or additionally, you can label the boxes.

Keep the overview

You've already boxed up all the clothes you don't need right now? Maybe you'll encounter this problem: at the beginning of the next season, you unpack your clothes from the boxes and realize that you've once again bought a new gray knit sweater, even though you already own three similar ones.
To prevent forgetting what you actually already have at home, you should keep a detailed record of the contents of your storage boxes. The best way to do this is to take photos when you pack the boxes, write down exactly what's in them, or use the AppmyBox app. This application for the smartphone allows you to register the boxes and assign the clothes to them in the form of photos.

Use drawers and roll your clothes

Your closet doesn't have to be all hangers and shelves. Storage in drawers has many advantages, provided you use the optimal organization system.
Subdivide your drawers with matching baskets or boxes first. To maximize space in the compartments and make everything easy to see, roll up your socks, tights, underwear and belts. Drawer dividers not only help you keep things organized, but also show you at a glance when you need to do laundry again.
You can also use the roll technique very well with T-shirts, pajamas, cotton shirts, leggings and polyester shorts, because they are usually thin and flexible. This technique is very space efficient if you use it correctly. Instead of folding and stacking your softer, thinner clothes, just fold them in half and roll them into neat little tubes. Rolled up, you can then put them in storage boxes.
A closet is a place to store lots of small things, too: Jewelry, belts, scarves, ties, and more. The best way to store small items and jewelry is to use adhesive hooks, which are placed on the inside of the closet door or on a blank wall.

Fragrant closet - With your old socks

Maybe you know it too: You don't wear some clothes for a long time and the whole closet starts to smell. So from time to time, wash the clothes that you haven't worn for a long time. Open the doors from time to time and let the closet air out for a few minutes. Since dust also collects in your closet, you should also wipe down the shelves.
To keep your closet smelling fresh, you can use a little trick. All you need is an old sock, 2 to 3 tea bags, essential oil and a ribbon. Put the tea bags in the sock, add a few drops of the fragrant oil and tie the sock at the top with the ribbon - that's how fast and cheap you have made an air freshener for your closet.
