Storage of cleaning products at home

Detergents and cleaning accessories are an essential part of every apartment. We buy and use cleaning products to create a clean, fragrant and hygienic environment for ourselves and the home.

However, many forget the importance of proper storage, not only to keep things organized, but also to protect themselves from potential hazards and increase the effectiveness of cleaning products.

safety first

Cleaning chemicals contain a variety of substances that can cause a lot of damage if used improperly. For example, dishwashing liquid, which is packed in an airtight container, poses little danger. Bleach for the curtains, which is so easy to unscrew, is very dangerous due to the noxious fumes.

Find a safe place

Cleaning products should remain hidden. Not only because the packaging doesn't exactly contribute to the attractive decoration of the apartment, but above all for safety reasons. For this reason, if you have children, it's a good idea to add extra security to the places where the chemicals are stored. Pet owners should also pay special attention to the safe storage of cleaning supplies in the house.

The ideal solution is to store chemicals in a closed, ventilated space. But if your apartment doesn't offer such conditions, a closet locked with a key or padlock is also a good option.

A closet in a hallway or in a bathroom seems like the perfect spot for cleaning supplies. However, keep in mind that chemicals also emit different types of fumes. Therefore, you should regularly (at least once a week) air the room where they are stored. You can also buy a plastic container, preferably with a lid. This will prevent the cleaning products from falling, spilling and injuring children or animals.

Watch out for expiration dates

Storing expired detergents can be very dangerous. When a product becomes obsolete, some substances can react with each other and turn into dangerous chemical cocktails. For this reason, it pays to check the condition of your cleaning products from time to time and discard those that have passed their use-by date.

Packaging

You should definitely avoid using packaging from chemical cleaning products for other purposes. The harmful substances settle deeper than it appears. It is therefore not enough to rinse the bottle with water in order to be able to use it again.

It's also a bad idea to decant or pour chemical substances into packaging that was previously used to store food. Children encouraged by colorful packaging can be seriously poisoned, as can adults who mix up the packaging. All it takes is a moment of inattention not to realize we're drinking corrosive substances instead of juice.

Convenient storage

Clutter is also an enemy of cleaning! The regular search for replacement sponges, glass cleaner or fresh cloths wastes a lot of time and energy. If you have to search forever for everything before cleaning, you quickly lose the desire to clean your apartment. Therefore keep all cleaning products and small accessories in one place.

You can take an example from the professionals: cleaning companies use special cleaning trolleys on large areas. Firstly, to avoid leaving a vial of chemicals somewhere, but also to clean effectively. Hardly any household needs such a cleaning trolley, but you can set up something similar in your home to achieve the same goal. Keep your most commonly used cleaning products, cloths, and sponges in a bowl, container, or basket that you can carry with you while you clean.

A clean and organized corner for supplies and cleaning gear will also come in handy when making that next grocery list. You can see at a glance which products you need the next time you visit the store.

An organized cleaning cupboard

Order is also important in the cleaning cupboard, because this not only saves you time, but also keeps track of the cleaning materials that you still have in stock. First, you should sort out any cleaning supplies that have expired or whose packaging is damaged. Be sure to follow the instructions when disposing of the chemicals so that you do not harm the environment or yourself with the chemicals. After that, you can sort your cleaning supplies in different ways, depending on which type is more convenient for you. On the one hand, sorting by type of product is possible. That means you sort the products by categories, such as sponges, cloths, all-purpose cleaners, hygiene cleaners, upholstery cleaners, etc. But you can also prepare boxes for specific purposes. Put all the cleaning supplies and sponges you need to clean your kitchen in one box and the cleaning supplies for the bathroom in another. You can also do this for other purposes, such as cleaning upholstered furniture and carpets or washing windows. So you have everything you need at hand on the cleaning day.

We recommend that you use transparent boxes to sort your cleaning supplies. You can divide your closet into different compartments, see immediately which cleaning agents are in your closet and transport them to the appropriate room for cleaning in the respective box. You can also label the boxes with the superordinate category of the content.

Do your cleaning products emit a chemical odor even when closed? Then storage boxes that you can seal airtight with a lid could help you. In this way, you also extend the effectiveness of the cleaning agents.

effectiveness

The correct storage of cleaning agents is not just a question of household safety. It is also a guarantee that they will work effectively from the first use to the last. Cleaning supplies are not cheap and they are designed to last as long as possible. Therefore, you should always store them according to the following criteria:

  • Suitable temperature (10 to 20 degrees Celsius)
  • Storage in undamaged original packaging
  • Protected from external conditions such as sunlight, humidity or high temperature

The best rule for the effective use of chemical cleaning agents, in addition to correct storage, is of course to follow the instructions on the packaging labels. This will ensure safety and reduce the likelihood of product expiration.
